Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
The central theme of the course is the way living organisms interact with the physical world surrounding them. Biomechanics makes use of models and methods drawn from physics and mechanical engineering to investigate a wide range of biological questions: the problems of locomotion (terrestrial locomotion, swimming, flying), the way organisms respond to wind and water currents, etc. The course also focus on the properties of biological materials (spider silks, muscles and tendons, etc) and their various structural and functional roles.
Content of UE
The course is divided into the following chapters ans sections:
1. Place of biomechanics in biology
2. Life's physical context
-Physical variables and their units
-Size and scale
3. Mechanical properties of biological materials
-Simple materials
-More complex materials (viscoelasticity)
-Simple structures (beams, columns, shells)
4. Fluids
-Viscosity and the pattern of flow
-The forces of flow
The course is supported by 3 training sessions dedicated to locomotion in human beings, measurement of the mechanical properties of a collagenous material, and measurement of the flexural stiffness of a beam-like structure.
