Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
understand the basic concepts of Thermodynamics; establish and apply the calculation methods allowing the determination of thermodynamic properties and their variations for simple thermodynamic transformations; establish the mathematical expressions of iso-property curves in thermodynamic diagrams; use thermodynamic diagrams; apply the first and second laws of thermodynamics; understand and establish the energy principles of thermodynamic cycle machines establish and use the fluid phase equilibria equations for pure compounds and mixtures as well as chemical equilibria equations; apply the first and second law of thermodynamics to simple open systems; understand the working principles of thermodynamic machines (power engines, refrigeration machines and heat pumps), calculate their energy performances and understand the principles of improvement of their performances analyse complex energy processes and calculate their performances;
Content of UE
Basic concepts; first and second laws of Thermodynamics; thermodynamic properties for pure compounds; thermodynamic diagrams; Liquid-vapour equilibria for mixtures; cryoscopy; solubility; chemical reactions; thermodynamic machines for energy conversion (principles), simple open systems. Simple open systems (compressors, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, mixture chambers, phase separators) Rankine machine for refrigeration applications and heat pumps Combustion engines

Corresponds to the LA Fundamentals of Thermodynamics (written exam: 60% of the mark, quoted exercice: 40% of the mark).

Presentation and works: corresponds to LA Tutorials of Thermodynamics (Tutorial reports (50%) Answers to oral questions during tutorials (50%)) Written exam: LA Engineering Thermodynamics for architects.

One single exam devided into parts related to the different LA (except LA Tutorials of Thermodynamics). For the part devoted to LA Fundamentals of Thermodynamics, same weighing factors (theory-exercice) as for Term 1. Mark for LA Tutorials of Thermodynamics is carried over.
