Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
The "Elements of General Chemistry" course will allow students to:
- Understand the chemical bonding and the building of a molecular structure ;
- Understand the different interactions between atoms, ions and molecules and, from there, the different states of matter and their main properties ;
- Understand the great principles of thermodynamics allowing to figure out the chemical reaction spontaneity ;
- Perceive the main factors affecting the speed of a chemical reaction.
The "Environment and water treatment" course will allow students to :
- Understand the impact of human activity on the environment ;
- Describe the main sources of pollution ;
- Interpret waste water analysis reports based sanitation standards ;
- Describe the techniques of collective and individual treatment of urban wastewater ;
- Implement processes or technologies that reduce environmental impacts as part of their project.
Content of UE
The course content is organised into different parts.
- The first part concerning the "Elements of general Chemistry will include : Electronic structure of atoms; covalent bonding; building of molecular structures. Electrostatic interactions, dipole moment, hydrogen bond. Cohesion in liquids ; structures of solids. Main properties of the gaseous, liquid, solid and glassy states. First and second principles of thermodynamics ; chemical reaction spontaneity (Gibbs free energy and equilibrium constant). Chemical reactions (acid-base, precipitation, redox). Chemical kinetics and elements of catalysis. Illustrations (building of polymers, concrete and metals corroding, ...) - The second part of the EU is based on the description of ecosystems, aqueous and gaseous pollution, impacts of human activities on the environment and on ecosystems.
- The third part is dedicated to the study of the properties of natural water and aqueous pollution, environmental legislation in the field of urban wastewater. The individual and collective treatment of water for drinking and sanitation are discussed: primary (mechanical and physico-chemical), secondary (biological / chemical) and tertiary treatment (elimination of nitrogen and phosphorus), treatment of sludge, and individual purification stations.
Prior Experience
Type of Assessment for UE in Q1
Q1 UE Assessment Comments
- For the AA "Elements of general chemistry", the evaluation will include quoted an oral examination. The oral exam verifies the theoretical knowledge. After receiving the question, the student write his answer on transparent slides that he will then present. The accent is put on the understanding of phenomena and concepts rather than on the memorization (100 % of the mark, maximal duration: 60 min).
- For the AA "Environment and water Treatment, the evaluation will include a scientific paper analysis with extended summary (25%), presentation (30%) and discussion (25%), and.visit report (20%).
Participation in the visits and the seminar (I-GPRO-127) obligatory, any absence will have to be justified.
Any unjustified absence during visits and seminar will not validate the EU.
Type of Assessment for UE in Q3
Q3 UE Assessment Comments
For the AA "Elements of general chemistry", the evaluation will include quoted an oral examination. The oral exam verifies the theoretical knowledge. After receiving the question, the student write his answer on transparent slides that he will then present. The accent is put on the understanding of phenomena and concepts rather than on the memorization (100 % of the mark, maximal duration: 60 min).
For the AA "Environment and water Treatment, the eveluation will include a visit report (20% of the final mark), scientific paper analysis with extended summary (25% of the final mark), presentation (30%) and discussion (25%).
Participation in the visits and the seminar (I-GPRO-127) obligatory, any absence will have to be justified.
Any unjustified absence during visits and seminar will not validate the EU.
