Programme component

Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Imagine, design, implement and operate compounds, products and materials to specific properties and physical, chemical and biochemical solutions/processes leading to obtaining these materials by integrating needs, contexts and issues (technical, economic, societal, ethical, safety and environmental).
    • Based on modelling, design one or more products/processes/solutions addressing the problem raised; evaluate them in light of various parameters of the specifications.
    • Evaluate the approach and results for their adaptation (optimisation, quality, environment, safety/security).
  • Mobilise a structured set of scientific knowledge and skills and specialised techniques in order to carry out missions of chemical engineering and materials science, using their expertise and adaptability.
    • Master and appropriately apply knowledge, models, methods and techniques specific to the field of chemistry and materials science.
    • Analyse and model a problem/process/producing pathway by critically selecting theories and methodological approaches (modelling, calculations), and taking into account multidisciplinary aspects.
  • Work effectively in teams, develop leadership, make decisions in multidisciplinary, multicultural, and international contexts.
    • Identify skills and resources, and research external expertise if necessary.
  • Communicate and exchange information in a structured way - orally, graphically and in writing, in French and in one or more other languages - scientifically, culturally, technically and interpersonally, by adapting to the intended purpose and the relevant public.
    • Select and use the written and oral communication methods and materials adapted to the intended purpose and the relevant public.
    • Use and produce scientific and technical documents (reports, plans, specifications, etc.) adapted to the intended purpose and the relevant public.
  • Adopt a professional and responsible approach, showing an open and critical mind in an independent professional development process.
    • Exploit the different means available in order to inform and train independently.
  • Contribute by researching the innovative solution of a problem in engineering sciences.
    • Design and implement technical analysis, experimental studies and numerical modelling.
    • Adequately interpret the results taking into account the reference framework within which the research was developed.
    • Communicate, in writing and orally, on the approach and its results in highlighting both the scientific criteria of the research conducted and the theoretical and technical innovation potential, as well as possible non-technical issues.

Learning Outcomes of UE

Introduce students to key techniques Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Computational/Numerical Heat Transfer (NHT) including flows with non reacting or reacting chemical species. For analysis or design problems involving flows with heat transfers and multispecies transport and reactions, the course objectives is to develop a critical mind in the field of computational fluid dynaics and computational heat transfer in order to be able :
To describe the various classical methods with a focus on finite volume methods for advection/diffusion flows and heat conductions, their potential and their limitations
To summarize the different steps and the most common simulation methods
To contribute to the development of CFD/CHT software
To understand what is implemented in existing codes and commercial software
To make a judicious use of numerical simulations and commercial software
To know how to judge the quality of simulation results
To be able to read and understand the literature on this subjects
To be able to solve a simplified 1D or 2D problems (Matlab or Python)
To use these knowledges as a basis for a possible Master Thesis Work (TFE : Travail de Fin d’Etudes)
To evaluate the relevance and quality of the simulation results (demonstrate critical thinking).
To make a judicious use of numerical simulations and commercial software
To able to identify the important components of a problem in order to model it

I-FLMA-107The overall AA mark is distributed as follows: - 2/3 for the theoretical mark (oral exam) - 1/3 for the practical work mark (oral report and defense)

Oral exam on theory: This oral exam takes place over half a day during the session. The exam questionnaire, for this course given in English, is written in English and French. Students can respond in either English or French (no assessment of English language proficiency). The response is prepared in writing on paper and is presented orally individually. The exam is carried out without the aid of notes and takes place over half a day during the exam session and aims to assess the degree of assimilation and mastery of the material (and not a restitution of pure memory of elements learned by heart).

Practical work: Written report combined with a discussion/defense during the oral exam on the developed code.

If the mark of one of the 2 parts (oral examination mark on the theory and practical work mark) is less than 7/20, the overall mark of the AA corresponds to the lower of the marks of the 2 parts.
I-META-024Oral exam covering the critical discussion of a scientific article linked to one of the themes of the course and distributed before the session + evaluation of group work reports.
