Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
To master the basic knowledge of the analytical treatment of fracture mechanisms.
To master the basic knowledge relative to the techniques of non-destructive testing most usually met in industrial environment.
Conducting a failure analysis from start to finish. Apply physical metallurgy investigation methods applied to metallic alloys.
Use the most common metallographic characterization tools available in the laboratory. Write an industrial expertise report. Present and comment on the results obtained.
UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance
The different AA of this UE aim to confront students with the possible causes of failure of systems working under mechanical stresses, with considering the possible effects of the environment. The following are addressed:
The analytical approach of fracture: brittle materials; ductile materials in local plasticity; ductile materials in generalized plasticity ; time and environment depending fracture mechanisms ; creep and stress relaxation ; mechanical fatigue ; slow crack propagation.
The identification and characterization of defects by non-destructive methods: Basics of physics of techniques (ultrasonoscopy, acoustic emission, radiography / tomography X, Eddy currents...); instrumentation, fields of application; new developments.
Performing an industrial expertise. The student chooses a case of failure of a metallic element and carries out complete expertise, with financial estimation. He/she performs the tests and analyzes the results. He documents himself on the subject. He writes a complete expertise report and presents it.
