Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
The main objective of the course is to make students aware of the problem of recycling materials and resource management, through the presentation of the main waste collection and treatment sectors, and the regulatory aspect surrounding recycling.
For the Life Cycle Assessment, at the end of the course, students will be able to
- master the LCA (Life Cycle Analyis/Life Cycle Assessment) methodology and associated standards;
- understand and interpret the results of an LCA study;
- explain the advantages, potential applications and limitations of this methodology;
- carry out a basic LCA study on the basis of existing data in demonstration cases;
- explain the concept of environmental communication in relation to an LCA study.
UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance
Le cours aborde les enjeux climatiques, environnementaux et s'intéresse aux transitions sociétales, environnementales et climatiques.
The interest in recycling: dependence on materials, the notion of "waste" and regulation. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of materials and case study. Waste treatment, waste reduction, re-use, recycling, regeneration (with energy recovery or incineration), and landfilling. Physical, physicochemical, and thermal waste treatment processes. Waste management (recycling of metals (steel, aluminium, copper, lead, zinc, precious metals), glass and ceramic recycling, polymer recycling, composite recycling, applications. Writing of a report based on a scientific paper in English (scientific and content analysis of the paper) dealing with recycling in the broadest sense of the term. Plant visit to illustrate industrial and semi-industrial recycling techniques. Use of simplified LCA software.

| I-META-022 | Project, 50 % of the note: The student receives the first week of course a paper in English on the recycling of metals or ceramics or polymers or composites. He must carry out a critical scientific analysis as well as a critique of the content of the article (writing a written report in French or in English of about 15 A4 pages to submit in the last week of December). Assessment: evaluation of the written report (A (excellent), B (very good), C (good), D (medium), E (insufficient)) by the Professor. Structure, spelling, and grammar are also taken into account. Plant visit, 10 % of the note: delivery of an astonishment report. Attendance at the plant visit is compulsory. Oral exam, 40 % of the note: duration: around 30 min. Discussion of the report + Questions about the content of the course and about the industrial visit (open course) (A (excellent), B (very good), C (good), D (medium), E (insufficient)). |
