Learning Outcomes of UE

Specific Competencies Related to the Subject Taught Explain the purpose and consequences of the rules and mechanisms that govern the main legal frameworks studied; Correctly identify the issues arising in concrete situations concerning the rights discussed and propose the most appropriate solutions by optimally utilizing the applicable rules; Grasp the ethical and legal challenges related to technological developments, as well as the societal implications in a context where various rights are confronted with significant technological advancements and competition with other fundamental rights. Transversal Competencies Introduction to legal reasoning; Demonstrate a sense of synthesis, precision, and discernment; Construct a structured, well-supported, and convincing argument; Project oneself into concrete situations, conceive relevant examples, and identify the advantages and disadvantages associated with different solutions.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

There are numerous rights whose complexity is increasingly growing. The time allocated to this course does not allow us to cover all the rights that might be applicable in the field of computer science, nor the details of each protection. Therefore, certain topics such as intellectual property; data and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and/or e-commerce law and ethics, as an underlying vector of the protections studied, will be specifically addressed.

Current debates related to different protections will also be discussed to reveal the economic and social issues associated with them, especially in the digital environment.

Students will be invited to discuss the most relevant issues in a reasoned manner and to take a position on certain legal proposals through assignments. The instructor will provide numerous examples implementing the mechanisms discussed to enable students to project themselves into concrete situations and apply the legal rules rigorously, and even creatively.

In general, the course is focused on both national and supranational perspectives. The analysis covers Belgian law, Benelux law, European Union law, and international conventional law.

S-INFO-057The evaluation will generally take the form of a written remote exam on the Moodle platform. If this is not possible, the exam will take the form of an oral exam conducted remotely via the Teams tool.

The evaluation will take place in June and/or August-September. The approximate duration of the exam is as follows:
- Written remote exam via Moodle: 1 hour 30 minutes in total, with 5 minutes between each question.
- Oral remote exam via Teams: 15 minutes for the oral exam via Teams.

The content of the exam is designed to verify whether the student has integrated the learning outcomes. Specifically, the questions aim to evaluate:
- Precision in restitution and legal justification (reference to law and case law);
- Discernment;
- Sense of synthesis;
- Quality and articulation of reasoning;
- Ability to apply knowledge and situate it in practical scenarios.

The final grade is not purely arithmetic and depends on the overall assessment of the performance by the instructor (serious error, omission of a topic, etc.).
