Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
By the end of this course, students will be able to subtitle different types of audiovisual documents and to choose their translation and rewording strategies according to each document's nature and particularities (type, topic, audience...). They will also master the technical constraints which are linked to subtitling practices (characters, timing). Furthermore, they will be able to efficiently use subtitling software.
UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance
This teaching module will be introduced with a theoretical presentation of the technical constraints linked to subtitling practices (particular formatting, character and length constraints, cultural challenges). The main translation strategies that can be implemented will be described (rewording, concision), as well as a particular subtitling tool: Aegisub. During the following class sessions, students will work on different types of audiovisual documents (TV shows, movies, documentaries, contents from social networks, videogames...), with a view to enabling students to deal with the constraints and particularities which characterise each type of document.
Prior Experience
Cultural and linguistic analysis of a given document, with a view to identifying the most relevant translation strategies.
