Learning Outcomes of UE
At the end of the first module of the master in translation, students will be able to:
- understand the challenges of general translation and make the necessary research to solve those challenges;
- translate general texts in written and with a high degree of precision, in a correct French and in the appropriate style;
- translate and/or summarize general texts orally, without any mistranslations and at the normal rhythm of speech delivery.
Specific skills:
- differentiate between the different types of translation (translation formats/localisation), depending on the sector, the target audience, the business objectives pursued, the budget;
- identify the fields concerned by localisation (IT, marketing, law, etc.) and the needs inherent in them;
- understand and master the tools and mechanisms of localisation;
- perceive the nuances of the customs and traditions of the source language and the target language (knowledge of the devices governing the two languages: formats, currencies, colours);
- set up a translation-localisation strategy according to the target market;
- identify relevant sources in order to adapt the source market text/product to the target market;
- use the tools specific to localisation.
Cross-cutting skills:
At the end of this course, the students will be able to:
- understand and use the language of the target market;
- understand the localisation process as a whole;
- understand specifically that the process of localisation takes into account the linguistic and cultural requirements of a country/region;
- identify the key elements of the source culture to be localised in the target culture;
- analyse the multimodal elements of a given piece of information (dialogue, music, sounds) and render them in a localisation situation.
UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance
Written translation of non-specialized texts of variable length and style into French, with highlighting of the common translation pitfalls and of the intertextual conventions in the source and target language.
Oral translation, exhaustive or summarized, of shorter general texts into French.
Introduction to revision and post-edition.
Texts accessible at the B2 to C1 level of the CEFR.
Theoretical part:
- definition of the concept of "localisation";
- definition of the notion of "general marketing" and "international marketing" (understanding the rules and environment in which texts evolve);
- concept of copywriting (designer/editor);
- principles of stylistics.
Practical component:
- understanding the issues and principles of localisation;
- use of computer tools used in localisation;
- management of translation memories (import, export);
- use of terminology retrieval functionalities;
- updating of databases;
- translation of user interface strings.

T-CHIN-503 | Paper submission Translation commentary on a text of the student's choice, based on the theoretical concepts discussed in the course. Critical analysis of the localisation of digital content chosen by the student, based on the theoretical concepts discussed in the course. Oral defence of the submitted work. Written translation Examination scored on 20 points based on the MQM model (Multidimensional Quality Metrics) and three criteria: accuracy and logic, quality of the target language, and consistency with the translation project. Direct scoring to 6/20 after three French spelling or grammar mistakes. Sight translation Weighting 70/30: — 70% for correctness with regard to the Chinese original text; — 30% for fluency in oral French. Direct scoring to 6/20 after three French grammar mistakes. Regular attendance is required. If the number of unjustified absences exceeds 30% of the total number of classes, the student will not be allowed to take part in the end-of-term exam and will automatically receive a 0/20 grade for the exam. |
