Content of Learning Activity
The course aims to approach a territory through the prism of ecosystems and their capacity to produce services to meet the fundamental needs of populations. By analyzing the services currently provided by a semi-rural valley, students will be able to explore, debate, and generate ideas to propose a project that presents a vision for human well-being, using public space as a lever for action. The notion of SES is a good way to provide students with terminology that allows them to address isues related to the ability of ecosystems to provide provisioning services (food, wood, energy, ...), regulating services (flood control, pollination, carbon storage, ...), and cultural services (health/well-being, harmony, landscapes, heritage value, ...) with a shared vocabulary and with the aim of 'managing' the territory by prioritizing certain services.
The teaching is composed of theoretical modules and group discussion/production modules using a 'set of photographic cards'. This illustrated card game allows students to freely express their thoughts within a framework set by the cards provided.
The theoretical modules aim to recall the concept of SES, its definition, the international context in which it fits, as well as the different services provided by the different landscape components of the study area. The links between land uses and services provided will be clearly identified and defined. Examples illustrating the different steps of the proposed methodology will also be presented.
The card game will be used to animate student groups using the photo-elicitation technique. The services are then mapped using the capacity matrix and desired futures located on this basis. The project proposed in connection with the other AA will then be compared to the initially prioritized services to ensure that the responses provided correspond well to the elements highlighted by the approach.
