Content of Learning Activity
The end-of-studies project (Master's thesis) is an important intellectual exercise in written expression. It provides the basis for an introduction to methods of investigation and structuring of thought, deepening of knowledge, objective criticism and verification of ideas. It should give students a taste for questioning and discovery, for reflection and clear formulation. It also provides the basis for personal development of knowledge (learning to learn) and opens the door to objective and disinterested research. Writing a Master's thesis also prepares you for the development of further research and for the comparison of ideas through systematic analysis.
There are two different forms of dissertation:
1.1. The summary Master's thesis
This is a personal and original synthesis, in the form of an illustrated text, relating to an architectural or urban design issue. The originality is not so much in the content as in the way the subject is approached. It is required to provide an original perspective, a personal point of view and to develop the arguments of a demonstration. The work contains mainly indirect references (ideas) and direct references (quotations) to existing works, both of which serve the purpose of demonstration.
This definition therefore excludes purely descriptive work, relating to a single architect or a single work that is widely criticised in the literature.
1.2 "Master's thesis-project
This is a work that deals with a subject, firstly in a theoretical and analytical manner, and secondly in a prospective manner: either by proposing a project or scenarios. It is therefore a study of a particular problem illustrated through a project (or scenarios) developed for this purpose by the student. It can therefore in no way be the architectural project developed in the framework of the workshop.
