      Content of Learning Activity

      The theoretical and iconographic content of this UE is composed of :
      * Generalities on the Fungus Kingdom;
      * Macroscopic characteristics and other useful information for the identification of macromycetes (mushrooms visible to the naked eye);
      * Characteristics of the major genera of Agaricomycetes (gilled mushrooms);
      * Poisonous mushrooms;
      * Edible mushrooms and their look-alikes.

      In addition, two field activities (compulsory !) are planned (one for the general discovery of mushrooms with revision of the theoretical notions seen previously and one more focused on the toxicity and edibility of the mushrooms encountered).

      Finally, a (compulsory!) laboratory activity is planned in order to use a key to determine (gilled mushrooms, an activity that ends with an assessment on the use of the identification key.

      Required Learning Resources/Tools

      * Poisonous mushrooms (*);
      * Edible mushrooms and their look-alikes (*).

      Other Recommended Reading

      There are many popular books and mushroom identification guides on the market. It is really important to warn you about the following false good idea: to "flash" on a "flashy" book offering you (for example) "The 200 most frequent mushrooms of our forests" which will give you the illusion of ease. However, it will be just the opposite, because the more you simplify things by reducing the number of species as a "field of possibilities", the more you will increase the risk of error through confusion. In other words, it is better to have a guide that is as complete as possible than one with a very limited number of mushrooms!

      From this point of view, the best identification guide on the market is undoubtedly the "Guide des Champignons France et Europe" (5th edition) by Guillaume Eyssartier & Pierre Roux, published by Belin.
