Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Support local governance choices
    • Develop management and governance skills specific to urban and regional planning processes
    • Contribute to the development of knowledge and its dissemination to professionals and the general public
    • Integrate the different expectations of stakeholders involved in the environment, urban planning and regional development
    • Support project dynamics (technical management/political management)
  • Master the tools, techniques and urban and regional engineering of observation, investigation, analysis, forecasting, representation, negotiation and communication
    • Recognise, through evaluation tools, the contribution that planning can make to built and natural environments and in particular to the consequences of climatic and socio-economic changes
  • Design and mobilise tools and mechanisms for the creation of cities and the transformation of territories in response to the issues and desired directions, sensitive to the challenges of social, economic and ecological transition
    • Work as part of an interdisciplinary team to develop urban and regional projects at different scales and in specific contexts
    • Demonstrate, within urban and regional projects, how the efficient and equitable management of resources, economic redevelopment and social innovation are closely linked to transitional urban planning

Learning Outcomes of UE

At the end of this teaching unit, a student will be able to represent a study area using a Geographic Information System (GIS). He will be able to create a geographical information acquisition protocol allowing him to analyze the territory in order to construct maps both in the diagnosis and project phases.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

Definition, objectives and applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Use of free GIS software (Quantum GIS) and manipulation of geographic data. Concepts of raster, vector, projection and geographic coordinate system and map servers.
