Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Support local governance choices
    • Support project dynamics (technical management/political management)
    • Master the conditions for the feasibility of an urban and regional project
  • Analyse the dynamics of the creation and transformation of areas: referring to theories, historical processes, constraints and potential, the interplay of stakeholders, and the various relevant spatial and temporal scales in order to identify the issues and set out forward-looking scenarios
    • Demonstrate skills in research, analysis and evaluation, as well as the ability to make appropriate decisions based on quantitative and qualitative evidence
    • Master the contemporary societal challenges of spatial planning
  • Master the tools, techniques and urban and regional engineering of observation, investigation, analysis, forecasting, representation, negotiation and communication
    • Recognise, through evaluation tools, the contribution that planning can make to built and natural environments and in particular to the consequences of climatic and socio-economic changes
    • Integrate the principles of equality and social justice, through a participatory approach to urban planning, in order to promote the involvement of different communities and to assess the importance and effectiveness of community involvement in the planning process.
  • Design and mobilise tools and mechanisms for the creation of cities and the transformation of territories in response to the issues and desired directions, sensitive to the challenges of social, economic and ecological transition
    • Work as part of an interdisciplinary team to develop urban and regional projects at different scales and in specific contexts
  • Draw up a critical and personal analysis of theories and practices, while demonstrating ability and the development of personal skills to enter the professional world and the debate on the future of cities and regions
    • Explain, through critical analysis, the political and methodological nature of sustainable urbanism and reflect on how planners work effectively within democratic decision-making structures

Learning Outcomes of UE

The internship is a temporary period of immersion in a professional environment during which the student acquires practical skills and applies the knowledge and methods developed during the master’s programme, with a view to obtaining the degree. This internship aims to expose students to the real conditions of professional practice and to strengthen their professional autonomy. Depending on the host organization, the student will develop one of the four pillars of the programme: • Analyze / Raise awareness • Design / Synthesize • Mobilize / Operationalize • Critique Analysis involves diagnostic studies, territorial assessments, or work carried out within observatories. Design relates to urban project management and activities within design offices or planning departments of public bodies (municipal, inter-municipal, and regional levels). Operationalization concerns project management assistance, the implementation of urban and planning projects, and may also include work within the non-profit sector. The critical approach is associated with research, evaluation, and knowledge production on cities and territories

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

The internship is a temporary period of professional immersion integrated into the Master’s curriculum. It enables the student to apply the theoretical, methodological, and technical knowledge acquired during the training through missions assigned by a partner organization (public, private, or non-profit). These missions, approved by the academic supervisor, are directly related to the learning objectives of the programme and to the student’s professional project. The internship contributes to the acquisition of professional skills, the consolidation of disciplinary knowledge, and supports the graduate’s integration into professional networks and urban planning practice. The internship plays a key role in the pedagogical structure of the master’s programme. It bridges academic learning and professional practice by allowing students to mobilize and deepen the competencies developed across the different modules. This professional experience helps students build their professional identity, understand the methods and challenges specific to urban planning, and prepare for responsibilities within multidisciplinary teams. The internship also enhances students’ reflective capacity regarding their learning process and the realities of professional practice.

Prior Experience

Students are expected to have acquired, during the first year and the initial modules of the master’s programme, the following skills:
• Ability to use diagnostic, mapping, and spatial representation tools;
• Understanding of the main issues, actors, and regulatory frameworks in urban planning and development;
• Capacity to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and to communicate clearly, both in writing and orally;
• Demonstrated autonomy, accuracy, and initiative in carrying out applied work.
