Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the theoretical and methodological fundamentals in arts, science, engineering and construction to solve problems involving these disciplines
    • Identify, describe and explain the basic principles of engineering sciences and construction
  • Complete an architecture project, individually or as part of a team
    • Analyse and characterise complex problems in the field of architecture by adopting a scientific, heuristic, hermeneutic, systemic and transdisciplinary approach which integrates ethical, cultural, human, economic, technological and environmental contexts and issues
  • Demonstrate thoroughness and independence throughout their studies
    • Develop scientific and cultural curiosity and open-mindedness

Learning Outcomes of UE

At the end of this course, the student will have knowledge of the evolution of urban planning and the concepts associated with the different components throughout its history. Through an understanding of the theoretical foundations of the discipline, students will be able to define (and identify) the key concepts related to urban planning (e.g. density, urban sprawl, compactness, etc.), as well as the different models of cities from Antiquity until today and know their basic principles and dynamics over time, but also their consequences on the environment and society.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

Considering the city as a complex object whose form is constantly evolving, this course addresses the notions and definitions of urban planning by integrating its history and following its modes of development. This course will allow the exploration of the theoretical bases of urban planning (with a lexicon/dictionary available) and its evolution through its history and the different models (types) that have marked cities (e.g. "linear city", "garden city", etc.) and build a culture of urbanization and city-making.
The course is developed in four parts:
- Part I: Urban planning, Urbanization and their fundamental principles (definitions, typologies of urban planning, objectives, strategic and regulatory tools of urban planning, urbanization and evolution, challenges and key aspects).
-Part II: Key concepts of urban planning from A to Z (urban planners' glossary)
- Part III: Composing urban space from antiquity to today (analysis of the three ages of urban planning)
- Part IV: Urban planning of tomorrow and case studies.
A summary of the material is scheduled (2H) at the end of the sessions.
