Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
The organic chemistry and introduction to polymer chemistry course aims to enable the student engineer in chemistry and materials science to:
- understand scientific documents or articles dealing with aspects relating to organic chemistry;
- know the general properties of organic compounds such as solvents, acids/bases, mesomeric effects;
- know the properties of chemical families and their economic interests;
- understand the reaction mechanisms of oragnic compounds ;
- know the main polymers (thermoplastics), their properties, their synthesis and production routes.
UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance
The organic chemistry course is organised in parts covering the following aspects:
- basic concepts (bond-isometrics, polarity-solubility, acids and bases);
- systematic study of the chemical classes and their reactivity on the basis of the presence of unsaturated bonds, aromatic rings, and functions.
The properties of organic solvents are exposed.
The reaction mechanisms and molecular structures of several classes of compounds including the principles of stereoisomerism are discussed: alkanes and cycloalkanes, alkenes and alkynes and aromatic compounds.
Particular attention is paid to the mechanisms of substitution, addition, elimination and rearrangement.
Vinyl polymers are studied within the framework of the AA "introduction to the chemistry of polymers" in particular for their various applications, routes of synthesis and industrial production, properties and economic interests; and are compared to other families of polymers. The characterization methods of these polymers are also discussed.
Prior Experience
The reaction chemistry concepts, thermochemical (chemical thermodynamic) and basic organic chemistry (green chemistry) are required to follow this teaching.
Type(s) and mode(s) of Q2 UE assessment
Q2 UE Assessment Comments
I-GPRO-225 :
20% of the mark covers the activity of the students in the practical work sessions and the quality of the reports and homework (evaluation by tests, by the reports as well as by the seriousness and the quality of the practical work) ; this note is carried to Q3
20% of the mark corresponds to the side exercise carried out during the semester, maximum duration 120 min (assessment of basic knowledge)
60% of the mark corresponds to the written exam lasting a maximum of 240 min (theoretical aspects and exploitation via exercises relating to general and stereochemical nomenclature, molecular spectrometry (IR and UV-visible) as well as questions and problems of organic synthesis).
I-GPRO-226 :
Written exam concurrent with the AA I-GPRO-225
Method of calculating the overall mark for the Q2 UE assessment
The method of calculation is the weighted average based on the weightings described in each AA.
GN = mark of the AA I-GPRO-225 * 0,75 + mark of the AA I-GPRO-226 * 0,25
