Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Implement an engineering approach dealing with a set problem taking into account technical, economic and environmental constraints
    • Design, evaluate and optimise solutions addressing the problem
    • Implement a chosen solution in the form of a drawing, a schema, a plan, a model, a prototype, software and/or digital model
    • Identify and acquire the information and skills needed to solve the problem
  • Understand the theoretical and methodological fundamentals in science and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
    • Identify, describe and explain basic scientific and mathematical principles
    • Identify, describe and explain the basic principles of engineering particularly in their specialising field
    • Select and rigorously apply knowledge, tools and methods in sciences and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines

Learning Outcomes of UE

Introduce the basics of telecommunication systems, both older and current ones. Acquire a mathematical background in signal processing and related topics that prepares students for advanced-level telecommunication classes.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

Introduction to communication chains. Probability theory. Integral transforms of continuous-time signals. Stochastic processes in telecommunications. Modulation. Demodulation and digital receivers. Analysis of discrete-time signals. Phase-locked loops. Electronic architecture of transceivers. Introduction to synchronization.

Prior Experience

Course "Electricité, signaux et systèmes". Ideally, "Probabilités et statistiques".

  • Written examination - Face-to-face
  • Production (written work, report, essay, collection, product, etc.) - To be submitted in class

Term 2 Assessment - comments

AATerm 2 Assessment - comments
I-ULBC-019Written exam in two parts: a closed-book one and an open-book one. The closed-book part focuses on fundamental theoretical concepts and developments as well as on standard methodologies, whereas the open-book part features deeper questions that require more complex thinking. A document of useful formulas will be given to the students for the closed-book part (it is written by the teacher and will be made available to the students prior to the "blocus" time frame). A project report is also part of the evaluation.

Term 3 Assessment - type

AAType(s) and mode(s) of Q3 assessment
I-ULBC-019
  • Written examination - Face-to-face
  • Production (written work, report, essay, collection, product, etc.) - To be submitted in class
  • Oral examination - Face-to-face

Term 3 Assessment - comments

AATerm 3 Assessment - comments
I-ULBC-019The teacher picks one of the following two options:
- A written exam similar to the one of Q1
- An oral exam (with closed book and open book parts, which is similar to the written exam).

The project report is also part of the evaluation.
