Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Imagine, design, build and operate machines, equipment and processes to provide a solution to a complex problem of energy production, conversion and transmission by integrating the needs, constraints, context and technical, economic, societal, ethical and environmental issues.
    • Identify the complex problem to be solved and develop the specifications by integrating the needs, constraints, context and technical, economic, societal, ethical and environmental issues.
    • Integrate rational energy management.
  • Mobilize a structured set of scientific knowledge and skills and specialized techniques to meet, with expertise and adaptability, the missions of the civil engineer in energy engineering.
    • Identify and discuss potential applications of new and emerging technologies in the energy field.
    • Assess the validity of models and results given the state of the science and the characteristics of the problem.
  • Plan, manage and carry out projects according to their objectives, resources and constraints, ensuring the quality of activities and deliverables.
    • Evaluate the approach and achievements, adapt them in light of the observations made and feedback received, and make the necessary adaptations and corrections.
  • Work effectively in a team, develop leadership, make decisions in multidisciplinary, multicultural and international contexts.
    • Identify skills and resources, and seek external expertise if necessary.

Learning Outcomes of UE

Apprehend problems in relation with polluted soils and polluted sites; Describe and explain exisiting regulations in Walloon Region ("décret sols") and elsewhere; Understand and discuss the characterisation techniques of potentially polluted sites; Describe and explain the different available technologies of reclamation; Being able to setup and apply described techniques to specific case studies.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

Sources and nature of pollutions ; soils ; polluted soils ; behaviour of pollutants in the ground and ground water (metals, metalloids, hydrocarbons); impacts of polluted soils ; techniques and strategies of characterisation of potentially polluted sites; rules ; reclamation techniques ; in-situ and ex-situ operations; physical methods; thermal methods; chemical methods; biological methods; isolation of a polluted soil; extraction of pollutants from the soil; destruction of pollutants into the soil; case studies.

Concerning the 'Subsurface characterization of contaminated sites' part : the evaluation includes the theoretical aspects and exercises exposed and discussed during the course, and their application to specific case studies.
Concerning the 'Remediation of Polluted Soils' part : a written report (bibliographical study on a polluted site) is requested and will be discussed during the oral examination.
