    • Argue to and persuade customers, teachers and boards, both orally and in writing.
    • Select and use the written and oral communication methods and materials adapted to the intended purpose and the relevant public.
    • Use and produce scientific and technical documents (reports, plans, specifications) adapted to the intended purpose and the relevant public.

Learning Outcomes of UE

Interact effectively in English, both orally and in writing, in the context of research work.
Note: This UE cannot be combined with the UE Presenting Your Thesis in English.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

This UE may involve the completion of several tasks, depending on the specifications established with the project supervisor (and, if applicable, the president of the ComDip):
- Production of intermediate documents in English (e.g., table of contents or chapters). The supervisor sets expectations for this work and evaluates compliance with the specifications (non-graded validation).
- Active participation in scientific meetings held in English (e.g., discussions with non-French-speaking researchers, meetings with the supervisor, etc.). The supervisor sets expectations for this activity and evaluates compliance with the specifications (non-graded validation).
- Writing the thesis manuscript in scientific English. The use of generative artificial intelligence tools to improve the quality of English expression is permitted. However, the use of generative AI tools to produce content is not allowed (see UMONS charter). The supervisor evaluates compliance with the specifications (non-graded validation; the content of the thesis is assessed in the UE "Master Thesis").
- Use of appropriate scientific vocabulary related to the thesis discipline in the manuscript, presentation materials, oral presentation, and responses to jury questions. The supervisor evaluates mastery of the specific scientific vocabulary (graded evaluation).
- Prior provision to the SLI of an extended summary of the TFE and a scientific and technical glossary (non-graded validation; compulsory)
- Presentation and defense of the thesis in English (including the presentation materials, oral delivery, and responses to jury members). A language instructor evaluates the linguistic quality of the work (minimum expected level: B2) and the fluency of communication during the presentation and interactions with the jury (graded evaluation; the scientific quality of the thesis and its argumentation is assessed in the UE "Master Thesis").
