Learning Outcomes of UE

Students will complete their knowledge on the gene expression as well as on protein functions. Therefore, at the end of the lecture, the basic principles associated with the genetic material will be acquired. The lecture will discuss new concepts and advanced methodologies in the area of molecular biology, including the new generation sequencing. Theoretical concepts will help the students to extract information from public databases (internet) and understand published scientific results. During practical work in laboratory, they will perform several techniques such as cloning and manipulation of recombinant DNA (PCR, cloning, determination and computer analysis of sequences).

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

After a review of the structure of DNA, its modifications and gene expression ( replication , transcription, translation and compensation ), the course will cover the main techniques related to molecular biology , the genetic engineering ( electrophoresis of DNA , DNA cloning , restriction enzyme , ...) to transgenesis ; but also more modern techniques derived from the discovery of the human genome as microarray DNA , or pharmacogenomics techniques that lead us towards personalized medicine . The exercises and practical work will illustrate the theoretical lecture.   The student will learn (1) how to understand and perform an experimental protocol, (2) how to analyse data and look for information on internet, (3) how to set up the best strategy to answer a scientific question. Moreover, during a team work "Du gène à la physiopathologie: une approche intégrée ", the students will have reminders of the specific biochemistry notions to realize the work. Demonstration of the use of different databases requisite to realize the work. Group exercise on a specific case from a gene acronym and a pathology.

Type(s) and mode(s) of Q2 UE assessment

  • Written examination - Face-to-face

Q2 UE Assessment Comments

Lecture = open-ended questions and/or MCQ and/or right or false

Biomedical students will have Practical Work whose rating will be based on a quoted report;  rated exercises + final examens as well as a learning activity entitled "From gene to pathophysiology: an integrated approach" which corresponds to the defense of an article (presentation) Weighting of these activities = 20% of the final rating.

Pharmacy students will have Practical Work whose rating will be based on a quoted report;  rated exercises + final questions as well as a learning activity entitled "Gene, pathology and therapy" which corresponds to the filing of a report Weighting of these activities = 15% of the final rating.
