Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Describe, organise, analyse and prioritise the phenomena observed in the medical field
    • Understand the expression of biological realities in absolute or relative terms, the orders of magnitude, proportions and probability
    • Understand and apply mathematical translations of large models and biological phenomena through abstract reasoning
    • Understand and use different graphical representations of numerical values and their relationships
    • Understand the chronology of a phenomenon and master the time scales and their representations
  • Control the molecular, morphological and functional approaches of normal and pathological conditions
    • Describe these states and technical examinations to quantify them in different approaches, as well as describe the operational characteristics of these examinations
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills developed within a medical context
    • Use a rich vocabulary accurately linking concepts and words, and understand the prefixes and suffixes used in the medical field
    • Summarise, explain, and argue
  • Develop reasoning skills
    • Understand and apply the basic principles of reasoning (obtaining data, analysis, synthesis, comparison, the rule of three, syllogism, analogy, Boolean logic, etc.)
    • Use a hypothesis in inductive, deductive or abductive reasoning
    • Develop critical thinking, test and monitor conclusions understanding the domain of validity, and explore alternative hypotheses
    • Integrate reasoning in clinical approaches
    • Manage doubt and uncertainty
  • Manage resources
    • Manage time
    • Prioritise
  • Manage their studies
    • Have developed an interest for medicine
    • Read, interpret, and critique a scientific article
    • Compare different sources of information
  • Be a responsible practitioner
    • Base reasoning on the data taken from scientific literature (evidence-based-medicine)

Learning Outcomes of UE

Pharmacology studies the interactions between chemical substances and living organisms. It plays a crucial role in understanding and improving drug therapy, aiming to maximise the efficacy and minimise the side effects of drugs. At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain the general principles linking the dose of drug administered and the effect obtained.
- Master the main concepts of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and the general principles of pharmacotherapy.
- Understand and apply quantitative pharmacokinetic equations and the quantification of drug-receptor interactions.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

This discipline encompasses the study of the mechanisms of action of drugs, their metabolism, distribution in the body and excretion. After an introduction to the history of pharmacology, we will look at the principles of pharmacokinetics, i.e. the absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination of drugs. We will then look at pharmacodynamics through the different sites of action of drugs and their mechanisms of action, as well as dose-effect relationships.
The exercise sessions will involve applying the theoretical concepts by solving real-life practical cases related to the students' professional fields (Medicine, Pharmacy or Biomedical Sciences).

Prior Experience

Biochemistry of the cell, membrane structure and transmembrane passage, physiology (including liver and kidney), handling of mathematical equations

Type(s) and mode(s) of Q1 UE assessment

  • Written examination - Face-to-face
  • Practical exam - Face-to-face

Q1 UE Assessment Comments

The evaluation will consist of a written exam on theoretical content, including multiple-choice questions and short-answer open-ended questions, as well as a practical exam focused on solving exercises and analyzing clinical cases.

Method of calculating the overall mark for the Q1 UE assessment

Weighting: Theory: 3/4 of the final grade + Practical work 1/4 of the final grade
