Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes of UE

At the end of this mycology module, which focuses on the discovery of toxic and edible mushrooms from our regions, students will be able to:
* identify and distinguish a number of genera and species of poisonous and edible fungi from our regions using reliable tools for fungi identification (key to identifying gilled mushrooms, ppt montages, field guide and reference websites...);
* understand the roles that mushrooms play in ecosystems;
* guide and advise patients who bring mushroom harvests to the pharmacy for later consumption (but within the limits of the pharmacist's knowledge, bearing in mind that in this highly complex field, any harvest that the pharmacist is not completely certain is edible must be definitively discarded);
* advise patients on serious reference books in the field of mycology and on possible resource persons (mycologists, mycology circles, reputable websites, mycological referents for the Poison Control Centre...);
 * associate certain symptoms/syndromes with certain species of mushrooms consumed.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

The theoretical and iconographic content of this UE is composed of :
* Generalities on the Fungus Kingdom
* Macroscopic characteristics and other useful information for the identification of macromycetes (mushrooms visible to the naked eye)
* Characteristics of the major genera of Agaricomycetes (gilled mushrooms)
* Poisonous mushrooms
* Edible mushrooms and their look-alikes

In addition, two field activities (compulsory!) are planned (one for the general discovery of mushrooms with revision of the theoretical notions seen previously and one more focused on the toxicity and edibility of the mushrooms encountered).

Finally, a (compulsory!) laboratory activity is planned in order to use a key to determine (gilled mushrooms, an activity that ends with an assessment on the use of the identification key.

Other Recommended Reading

AAOther Recommended Reading
M-DOYM-215There are many popular books and mushroom identification guides on the market. It is really important to warn you about the following false good idea: to "flash" on a "flashy" book offering you (for example) "The 200 most frequent mushrooms of our forests" which will give you the illusion of ease. However, it will be just the opposite, because the more you simplify things by reducing the number of species as a "field of possibilities", the more you will increase the risk of error through confusion. In other words, it is better to have a guide that is as complete as possible than one with a very limited number of mushrooms!

From this point of view, the best identification guide on the market is undoubtedly the "Guide des Champignons France et Europe" (5th edition) by Guillaume Eyssartier & Pierre Roux, published by Belin.

AATerm 1 Assessment - comments
M-DOYM-215There are four graded exams in the programme:

a) field visit report (creation of description sheets of mushrooms observed in the field accompanied by photos); this test requires therefore your physical presence during the two field visits!!!
Value = 10 points

b) compulsory laboratory: identification of gilled mushrooms using an identification key, which follows directly on from a T.P. session focusing on the use of this identification key; this exam therefore requires your physical presence! (face-to-face exam!)
Value = 10 points

c) creation of a spore-deposit and a description of a gilled mushroom accompanied by photos; all to be submitted on the Moodle platform by the end of November at the latest (remote exam!)
Value = 10 points

d) the "virtual basket": you will receive 10 photos of different mushrooms to be identified, accompanied by a possible commentary (odour, flavour, ecology....). This test is intended to reflect the delivery of a basket of mushrooms to a pharmacy and your identification of the 10 species presented, by proposing a name for each species and identifying the comestibility and toxicity of each of them, as well as their possible syndrome in case of ingestion; assessment on the Moodle platform by the end of November at the latest (remote exam!)
Value = 10 points

Total: 40 points, reduced to 20 points
