Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the theoretical and methodological fundamentals in psychology, educational sciences and language sciences to analyse a particular situation involving speech therapy
    • Explain and illustrate, with examples, human functioning, particularly in its pathological dimensions
  • Grow personally and professionally
    • Name the separate branches of speech-language therapy

Learning Outcomes of UE

At the end of this teaching unit, students will have an overview of the characteristics of the speech therapy profession: its various fields of practice, its professional and legal framework, and the skills and knowledge associated with it. They will also be able to describe certain common pathologies relevant to speech therapy, as well as some assessment methods and treatment options. Finally, they will have acquired some terms from the speech therapy lexicon.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

The teaching unit will cover the following areas:- Clarification of essential theoretical concepts: definition of the concepts of communication, language, and speech, as well as the related areas of intervention in speech-language therapy.- Introduction to language disorders: a general theoretical overview of the main language disorders, whether developmental or acquired, and their clinical profiles. Disorders affecting the ENT sphere (sensory disorders, voice and swallowing disorders, oromyofunctional disorders) and numerical cognition (dyscalculia) will also be addressed.- Assessment and intervention methodology: an introduction to the main approaches used in speech-language therapy, with an emphasis on the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to language disorders. Principles of prevention and family involvement will also be discussed.- Overview of the speech-language therapy profession: history of the profession and exploration of legal aspects (healthcare funding, administrative responsibilities), types of professional practice (private, salaried), and settings (hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, PMS centers, etc.). The course will also provide an overview of the theoretical knowledge, technical skills, and personal qualities required for professional practice.
