Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
At the end of the course, students will have discovered the diversity of approaches to language and its various objects of study. They will have acquired a foundation in speech therapy that will enable them to understand language assessment methods, the terminology used to observe associated language phenomena, and the main developmental and acquired language disorders. They will also be able to analyze speech samples from people with language disorders and recognize the importance of taking language aspects into account during a clinical interview.
UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance
These two AA courses, intended for both general studies students and speech therapy students in their second year of a bachelor's degree, provide an opportunity to highlight the interdisciplinary nature of these two approaches. Their content will illustrate the value, for both courses, of acquiring theoretical knowledge in these complementary fields, as well as the need for collaboration between psychologists and speech therapists in the professional environment.
With this in mind, the "Language and Communication: Theoretical Aspects" course will explore the main theoretical trends and experimental studies that have led to different definitions of language, distinguishing in particular between the concepts of language and speech, while placing them within a broader conception of communication (verbal and nonverbal). An introduction to the clinical aspects of language assessment and disorders will be offered, addressing the most common clinical pictures (developmental disorders vs. acquired disorders) and describing the different components of language using terminology from linguistics that is relevant to speech therapy (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics).
The "Language and Communication: Clinical and Professional Practices" course will provide an opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in the first AA through various activities such as speech corpus analysis and seminars reflecting on the impact of communication and language skills in clinical interviews.
