Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the theoretical and methodological fundamentals in psychology and educational sciences to analyse a situation involving these disciplines
    • Identify and explain the concepts, principles and models of fundamental theoretical trends in psychology and educational sciences and their applications
  • Understand the fundamentals of intervention
    • Describe and illustrate the different types of intervention in psychology and educational sciences (or education systems)
    • Describe the steps of the implementation process of interventions and identify the stakeholders involved
    • Explain the various issues underlying any intervention, and justify them according to their application context
    • Identify the type of intervention, with reference to a theoretical framework, including the choice of appropriate tools to be implemented based on the analysis of a well-defined situation
  • Provide clear, accurate, and reasoned information
    • Provide information (both orally and in writing) regarding the fields of psychology and educational sciences in an intelligible manner, with a good command of the language communication techniques.
  • Collaborate, work in a team
    • Interact effectively with other students to carry out collaborative projects.
    • Identify and appropriately implement the different ways of working in a group
  • Act ethically and professionally
    • Name, and be familiar with, legal frameworks and ethical principles that govern research and practice in psychology and educational sciences, and implement them in studies in a reflexive manner (exams, work, etc.)
  • Grow personally and professionally
    • Name the separate branches of psychology and educational sciences
    • Identify the different stakeholders involved in the practice of psychology and educational sciences
    • Develop their scientific curiosity and open-mindedness
  • Understand the fundamentals related to the scientific approach in psychology or educational sciences
    • Conduct relevant research from scientific literature, from both Francophone and Anglophone references, and select appropriate elements with respect to a particular research topic.
    • Give a critique and argue a point of view as part of a scientific approach

Learning Outcomes of UE

This course aims to prepare students for the realities of working in institutions and the challenges of clinical practice in an institutional context.
•    Understand the legal and ethical framework of clinical psychology in Belgium and its application in institutions on a theoretical level (lectures) and a practical level (interview with a practicing psychologist)
•    Understand the specificities of different institutional settings, in particular: 
o    Differentiate between the various types of institutions and facilities where psychologists can practice (hospitals, medical-social centers, outpatient and residential facilities, educational and judicial institutions).
o    Understand the challenges of clinical work within a multidisciplinary team and the expectations of other professionals.
o    Reflect on the ethical and legal issues of shared professional confidentiality in an institutional setting.
•    Develop clinical skills adapted to institutional constraints, including clinical interviews, group interventions, and crisis management.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

Chapter I. Introduction to clinical practice. This chapter covers Belgian legislation and practitioner ethics. 
Chapter II. The mental health network in Belgium. This chapter defines primary healthcare and provides an overview of mental health networks.
Chapter III. The work of psychologists in institutions. This chapter identifies the different types of institutions and settings in which clinical psychology is practiced; it considers the challenges of clinical work in a multidisciplinary team.
Chapter IV. Intervention methods. This chapter considers individual and group interventions, the importance of supervision, and crisis management.
