Programme component

Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the fundamentals
    • Understand the key areas of chemistry: inorganic, organic, physical, biological and analytical chemistry, as well as basic knowledge required in mathematics, biology and physics
    • Have developed the learning skills needed to undertake further studies with a sufficient degree of autonomy
  • Collaborate and work in a team
    • Have developed practical skills in chemistry through practical sessions in the laboratory, including analytical, organic and physical chemistry, during which they have worked individually or in groups.
  • Have a rigorous scientific approach
    • Gather and interpret relevant scientific data and critically analyse it considering scientific, ethical and environmental aspects

Learning Outcomes of UE

The course aims to provide both theoretical and practical knowledge in general chemistry through lab sessions and exercises.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

Exercises and laboratory work covering the following topics: quantum description of the atom · chemical bonds and intermolecular forces · chemical thermodynamics and kinetics · states of matter, mixtures, and solutions · main types of chemical reactions (acid-base, redox, complexation).

Prior Experience

Not applicable

Type(s) and mode(s) of Q1 UE assessment

  • Production (written work, report, essay, collection, product, etc.) - To be submitted in class
  • Graded assignment(s) - Face-to-face

Q1 UE Assessment Comments

Practical work and/or exercise sessions are subject to continuous assessment.
For practical work, this consists of face-to-face assessment of participation in laboratories. Reports will only be taken into consideration if the student has actually participated. If the student is absent, the report will receive a zero mark.
For exercise sessions, assessment is based on a test. If a student is absent from the test without a doctor's note, they'll get a zero.

Method of calculating the overall mark for the Q1 UE assessment

The Q1 grade is the weighted average of the exam grade (15/35) and the practical work grade (20/35). The Q1 grade accounts for 50% of the overall grade for the course unit.

Type(s) and mode(s) of Q1 UE resit assessment (BAB1)

  • Graded assignment(s) - Face-to-face
  • N/A - Néant

Q1 UE Resit Assessment Comments (BAB1)

Not applicable

Method of calculating the overall mark for the Q1 UE resit assessment

A catch-up session for Q1 is organized if Q1 grade < 10, but only covers the exercises, via a new test; the practical work grade is retained.  The final Q1 grade used to calculate the EU grade is the higher of the first Q1 assessment grade and the Q1 catch-up grade.

Type(s) and mode(s) of Q2 UE assessment

  • Production (written work, report, essay, collection, product, etc.) - To be submitted in class
  • Graded assignment(s) - Face-to-face

Q2 UE Assessment Comments

Practical work and/or exercise sessions are subject to continuous assessment.
For practical work, this consists of face-to-face assessment of participation in laboratories. Reports will only be taken into consideration if the student has actually participated. If the student is absent, the report will receive a zero mark.
For exercise sessions, assessment is based on a test. If a student is absent from the test without a doctor's note, they'll get a zero.

Method of calculating the overall mark for the Q2 UE assessment

The Q2 grade is the weighted average of the exam grade (15/35) and the practical work grade (20/35). The Q2 grade accounts for 50% of the overall grade for the course unit.

Type(s) and mode(s) of Q3 UE assessment

  • Written examination - Face-to-face

Q3 UE Assessment Comments

Not applicable

Method of calculating the overall mark for the Q3 UE assessment

The Q3 assessment takes the form of a written exam on the exercise blocks and practical work blocks that were not passed in Q1 and Q2. For example, a student who scored 10/20 in practical work and 3/20 in exercises in Q1, and 9/20 in practical work and 11/20 in exercises in Q2, is assessed on the exercises from Q1 and the practical work from Q2. The marks for the subjects passed are retained.  The Q3 grade is the weighted average of the exercise grades (15/35) and the practical work grades (20/35).
