Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
At the end of this course, the student will have acquired a global vision of the mechanisms of evolution and will have developed multidisciplinary knowledge in genetics and population biology.
UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance
The theoretical and practical courses provide the foundations of evolutionary biology. It introduces students to the following concepts: the history of evolutionary science; heredity and genetic mixing; the concept of population; the Logistic Model; the genetic origin of intraspecific variation; atavism and vestigial structures; natural selection and adaptation; artificial selection; domestication syndrome; sexual selection; population genetics; genetic drift; emergence of sexuality; species concept; mechanisms of speciation; mechanisms of co-evolution; evolution of sociality; epigenetics; evolution during the Anthropocene; phenotypic plasticity
Prior Experience
A thorough knowledge of the notions seen in the 1st year General Biology course is strongly recommended.
Type(s) and mode(s) of Q1 UE assessment
Q1 UE Assessment Comments
Students will be tested and evaluated on both the theoretical and practical parts of the course.
Method of calculating the overall mark for the Q1 UE assessment
The examination on the subject taught accounts for 66% of the grade of the UE. The exam on the subject seen during the practical work accounts for 33%. May be modified.
