Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
On completion of this course, students will be able to describe the biodiversity, morphology and evolution of the main plant families common to Belgium, as well as the exotic plants common to our diet. They will be trained to describe their floral and vegetative anatomy, their main active compounds and their reproductive cycle.
UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance
Anatomy, biodiversity, evolution and ecology of vascular plants (sexual organs, vegetative organs, fruits, seeds); Conservation; APGIV phylogenetic classification; Poisonous plants; Edible plants; Medicinal plants; Embryophytes; Tracheophytes; Spermatophytes; ANA group; Monocotyledons; Eudicotyledons; Superrosidae; Superasteridae.
Prior Experience
Biodiversity; Kingdoms; Biochemistry; Plant cell; Plant histology; Plant anatomy; Reproductive cycle; Bryophytes; Pteridophytes; Spermatophytes; Gymnosperms; Angiosperms; Stem; Leaf; Root; Floral morphology; Ovule; Fruit; Seed; Pollination; Dissemination; Flora; Herbarium.
Q1 UE Assessment Comments
Not appicable
Q1 UE Resit Assessment Comments (BAB1)
The lecture is divide in a pratical part (15h) and theoritical part (15h). Both parts are valuated for 50% of the note. The examen on the theoritical part is written and the pratical is evaluated orally with a pratical evaluation on the plant determination.
Type(s) and mode(s) of Q2 UE assessment
Q2 UE Assessment Comments
The subject is divided into a practical part and a theoretical part. Attendance at practical work (50% of sessions) is compulsory to take the practical exam. Both parts count for 50% of the final grade. The herbarium counts for 30% of the practical grade. The theoretical exam is written and the practical exam is oral.
A minimum of 10/20 must be obtained in the practical AA and 10/20 in the theoretical AA, failing which the mark for the weaker part is used for the final UE mark. Failure of one of the AAs automatically results in failure of the whole UE. In the event of failure, it will not be possible to carry over an AA mark from one year to the next. Please note: practical work must take place during the year, and cannot be taken in the second session. Non-participation in practical work therefore results in failure without the possibility of a second session. Unjustified absences from practical work are equivalent to a mark of 0/20 for all activities associated with this practical work (reports and tests). The Q2 and Q3 practical exams are only open to students who have submitted a high-quality herbarium deemed acceptable by the teacher. If the herbarium is not handed in, the first and second session practical exams cannot be taken, automatically resulting in failure of the course for the academic year.

Q3 UE Assessment Comments
The subject is divided into a practical part and a theoretical part. The two parts each count for 50% of the final mark. The herbarium counts for 30% of the practical grade. The theoretical exam is written and the practical exam is oral. The herbarium cannot be presented or retaken in Q3. The herbarium mark from Q2 is carried over to Q3. Attendance at practical work (50% of sessions) is compulsory to sit the practical exam.
