Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the fundamentals
    • Undertake further study having already acquired and enhanced the necessary learning skills
  • Provide clear and accurate information
    • Communicate complex information to a qualified scientific partner

Learning Outcomes of UE

Students are inundated with an avalanche of information from a variety of sources. Faced with this profusion of information, distinguishing between accurate and scientifically valid data is a real challenge. This is a crucial skill for students, who need to practise it throughout their academic studies and professional careers. The Bibliography and Computer Tools course is designed to help them hone their critical thinking and analytical skills. It builds on their training to guide them in the rigorous evaluation of information, an indispensable asset in their future professional practice.
At the end of this course, students will be able to carry out exhaustive or targeted bibliographic research, quickly and efficiently, using both scientific and general public databases. They will also be able to construct a thesaurus-guided bibliographic search.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

The course will first cover the types of documents in which to find scientific information (books, articles, monographs, etc.) and how to present these sources in a bibliography (accompanied by a presentation of software such as Zotero, Mendeley, etc.). The course will then cover the basics of advanced documentary research, with a presentation of databases (analytical vs. summary, PICO approach, Web of Science, Google Scholar, PubMed, etc.) as well as criteria for assessing the reliability and relevance of sources (critical reading, quick sorting). Numerous AI-type tools are appearing to support students/researchers in their documentary research. The strengths/weaknesses of these tools and their relevance will also be discussed. A final chapter will cover the basics of scientific communication (oral or written) and the importance of integrity in scientific production.
