Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • In the field of biological sciences and particularly in the field of the biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, possess highly specialised and integrated knowledge and a wide range of skills adding to those covered in the Bachelor's programme in biological sciences.
  • Conduct extensive research and development projects related to biological sciences, in biochemistry and in molecular and cell biology.
    • Apply, mobilise, articulate and promote the knowledge and skills acquired in order to help lead and complete a project.
    • Contributing to a project by mastering its complexity and taking into account the objectives, allocated resources and constraints that characterise it.
    • Show initiative and be able to work independently and in teams.
  • Manage and lead research, development and innovation projects.
    • Understand unprecedented problems in biological sciences, and more specifically in biochemistry and molecular and cell biology and its applications.
  • Master communication techniques.
    • Communicate, both orally and in writing, their findings, original proposals, knowledge and underlying principles, in a clear, structured and justified manner.
    • Adapt their communication to a variety of audiences.
  • Develop and integrate a high degree of autonomy.
    • Aquire new knowledge independently.
    • Pursue further training and develop new skills independently.
  • Apply scientific methodology.
    • Critically reflect on the impact of their discipline in general, and on the contribution to projects.

Learning Outcomes of UE

This training session allows students to learn, from a practical point of view, the techniques of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It consists of a theoretical introduction, demonstrations, and practicals during which the student has to prepare, observe ans photograph a sample of his/her choice in SEM.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

The training session lasts for one week. The first day is dedicated to theoretical aspects (functioning of the microscopes, sample preparation) and to demonstrations of both types of microscopes (SEM and TEM). The remaining of the week focus on the practical aspects: sample preparation (critical point drying, sputter coating), training to the use of the SEM and sample observation. For this last part, each student works individually with an instructor. Not applicable
