UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

This course offers a sociological analysis of the phenomenon of globalization, linking it to gender dynamics. First coined in the 1970s, the notion of globalization has been used to designate a series of major transformations: the boom in international trade, the development of information technologies, the intensification of migration, the rise of emerging countries, and the reconfiguration of state sovereignty. Traditionally defined by four characteristics - the shrinking of the world, the domination of global capitalism, the questioning of national sovereignties, and post-colonial continuity - globalization is a multi-causal, multi-dimensional process. This course examines its novelty, its forms (flows, networks, territorial anchorage), its actors (elites vs. globalization from below), and its effects (standardization or diversification). But beyond these classic dimensions, the course focuses on gender relations in a globalized world. The aim is to understand how globalization affects women and men differently, how it reconfigures gender norms, and how feminist struggles are organized on a transnational scale. In particular, the course will address: The sexual division of labor in global value chainsFemale migration and care workNeoliberal policies and their gendered effectsGlobal feminist resistance and circulations Through the study of theoretical texts, empirical surveys and concrete case studies, students will mobilize the tools of gender sociology to analyze the contemporary challenges of globalization.
